Snow Day Make-up – Classes will be held on March 15

Because of the class time missed during our recent winter weather, Malvern Prep will have classes on Monday, March 15. This day was scheduled to be an in-service day for the faculty, but the need to get caught up with class time necessitates changing this day to a class day. Monday, March 15 will be a Day 6 and will run on an A Schedule. All school districts will be bussing. If you have a conflict because you have already made plans for that date, please contact Fr. Flynn directly. Thank you very much for your patience and understanding.

Father-Son Banquet Featuring Special Guest Vince Papale – March 16

The Annual Father-Son Banquet sponsored by the Malvern Prep Fathers' Club will be held on Tuesday, March 16, at 5: 30 p.m. in the O'Neill Sports Center. This year, the Fathers' Club is proud to announce that Vince Papale, former Eagles player and inspiration for the film Invincible, is the guest speaker. Centreville School and A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children present “2010 - A Childhood Odyssey” Workshop – March 19

Centreville School in Delaware is hosting the area’s best behavioral health professionals and specialists for a day long workshop on the “hot topics” affecting today’s adolescents and youth. This event is open to Malvern parents and faculty. Please see the attached flyer for more information and to register.

Diversity Club/Help Haiti Initiative Open Mic Night – March 19

The Diversity Club/Help Haiti Initiative will be holding an Open Mic Night on Friday, March 19 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Duffy Arts Center. The cost to attend is $4. All proceeds will go to Catholic Relief Services to benefit the earthquake victims in Haiti. The Diversity Club will also be collecting medical supplies for the Haiti Clinic. Please bring Tylenol, Band-aids, gauze, Ace bandages, etc. There will be a box in the lobby where you can drop these items. If you are interested in signing up to perform (music, poetry, dance, stand-up comedy—whatever!) please e-mail Nicole Cirone at ncirone@malvernprep.org by Friday, March 12. Faculty, staff and parents are invited to perform!

Mothers’ Club Best Nest Easter Basket Assembly – March 23

The Mothers' Club will be assembling Easter Baskets for the children of Best Nest on Tuesday, March 23 at 6:30 p.m. in Stewart Hall. Best Nest is an organization that helps children that are infected or affected by AIDS or have other special needs. Please bring your donations to the Visitor Center by March 19. Children range from infants to 18 years of age. Easter candy and any small gifts are appreciated - anything that can fit in a basket – coloring books, crayons, bubbles, Play-Doh, Lego sets, matchbox cars, make-up, jewelry, toiletries. No time to shop? Cash donations are greatly appreciated. Please contact Anna Frey or Casey Luukko with any questions. Thank you in advance for your generosity and for helping to make the children's Easter special.

Operation Easter Outfits – Donations Due March 19

BunnyWithCoat.gifThe St. Agnes Day Room in West Chester is in need of children’s clothes for Easter, infants to size 16, boys and girls, new or gently used. Please consider helping this worthy cause. Donations are needed by Friday, March 19, at 14 Remington Lane in Malvern (house backs up to back of Malvern Prep School property). Please see the attached flyer for more information. Your prayers and generosity are greatly appreciated by many!

Mother-Son Mass and Dance – March 20

The Mothers’ Club will be hosting its annual Mother-Son Mass and Dance on Saturday, March 20. Mass is 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel, and dinner and dancing begin at 7:00 p.m. in Dougherty Hall. This year’s theme is Basketball March Madness! RSVP now for what will sure to be a memorable event. Cost is $40 per family. Please see attached flyer for more information. Please note: the Mother-Son Dance was postponed from February 6. If you cannot attend the dance because of the date change, and you have already sent in your reservation, please contact Conni McDonnell.

Arts Department New York City Trip - In the Heights – March 24

The Malvern Arts Department is sponsoring its annual Broadway trip on Wednesday, March 25 to see In the Heights. This trip is open to all Malvern students, but seats will not be reserved without payment. B.A.S.H. Ads Due – March 26

The Ad book for B.A.S.H. is reaching out to all family and friends to sell or place an ad. If every family purchased a half-page we would raise $143,750 – before the auction even started! Take a gift contract to work or reach out to a family member today. The print deadline is March 26. All ads and businesses will be promoted online until January 2011! Junior-Senior Prom at Drexelbrook – March 27
Tickets must be purchased in school by Wednesday, March 24.

The Junior-Senior Prom will be held on Saturday, March 27 from 7:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. at Drexelbrook in Drexel Hill. The cost is $160 per couple and tickets must be purchased in school by Wednesday, March 24. Please see the attached flyer for more information. This year’s theme is Mardi Gras - “Laissez les bons temps rouler!” - “Let the good times roll!”

9th Grade Practice Exam for 7th Graders – March 27

Malvern Student Competes at Chester County Spelling Bee

Eighth-grader Ross Sherman well represented Malvern Prep today at the Chester County Spelling Bee, finishing in a tie for 14th place in the competition, which was held at the Intermediate Unit.

Malvern Names New Dean of Students and Department Chair

March 11, 2010
Congratulations to teachers David Cambridge and Jim Kirchner, who were each appointed to leadership positions for the coming year. Cambridge, a science teacher will be Malvern’s new Dean of Students, taking over for Kevin Whitney. Cambridge will be working with Whitney and Assistant Dean Fred Hilliard for the remainder of the year. Kirchner will be the new Chair of the Language Department. He replaces Alan Tomaszewski, who has served as chair for 19 years. Thanking Tomaszewski, Dean of the Upper School Steve Valyo said, “Al’s vision and leadership fostered an atmosphere of growth and enabled the department to blossom over the years.”

Malvern’s Heller Wins Bryn Mawr Rotary Soccer Award
March 11, 2010
Sam Heller was selected as winner of the 2009 Outstanding Male Soccer Award by the Bryn Mawr Rotary Club. Heller is only the second Malvern player to be honored in the 30-year history of the award. The other was Jerry Yirenkyi ’04, who won in 2002. Malvern alumnus Andy Talone ’59 oversees the selection of the award. Heller, a standout player on defense, was an All-Main Line first Team selection this year.

Ian Mitchell ’06 Wins 2010 Rare Disease Champion Award

Thanks to your votes, Malvern alumnus Ian Mitchell was named the 2010 Rare Disease Champion over four other worthy Division I nominees. Malvern Prep appreciates your efforts to learn about Mitchell’s quest to help children suffering from cancer and his support of Evanfest.

 Malvern Eighth-grader Wins Court Tennis Skills Competition
March 11, 2010
Malvern eighth-grader Evan McDonnell qualified and competed in the U.S. National Court Tennis Parent/Child Tournament this winter at The Georgian Court at Georgian Court University in Lakewood, N.J. Although Evan and his mother, Conni didn't make it to the finals, Evan won the Junior Skills competition. This national competition, sanctioned by the U.S. Court Tennis Association and open only to qualifiers and ranked competitors. Court tennis is the original indoor racquet sport from which the modern game of lawn tennis, or tennis, is descended. Court tennis is still played by enthusiasts on 47 existing courts in the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States and France.
